latch needle open and closed

When the latch needle(s) is open it is ready to receive the yarn.
Once the latch needle is closed two of the following action can be occurring;
first a piece of yarn is held within the latch, the needle slides underneath the previous yarn row and a stitch is created.
second the latch can be closed so the needle can not receive the yarn.
