When the latch needle(s) is open it is ready to receive the yarn.
Once the latch needle is closed two of the following action can be occurring;
first a piece of yarn is held within the latch, the needle slides underneath the previous yarn row and a stitch is created.
second the latch can be closed so the needle can not receive the yarn.
